…Packages/ means Git IsGitInstallation() returned true for anything under Packages/, so registry (OpenUPM), file: and embedded installs were compared against the GitHub branch package.json. The window could then announce an update the Package Manager had no way to install, while the Package Manager correctly reported no update. PackageInfo.source now decides: Git, Registry, Local, Embedded, BuiltIn, or AssetStore for anything imported into Assets/. Only Git and Asset Store have a channel to poll; the others return a skipped result and leave the cache alone.

Why
PackageUpdateService.IsGitInstallation()answered "yes" for anything whose package root starts withPackages/. Registry (OpenUPM),file:and embedded installs all resolve there, so they were comparedagainst
MCPForUnity/package.jsononmain/beta.The result was a window announcing
Update available: v10.3.0 (current: v10.0.0)while the PackageManager correctly reported nothing to install — the registry had no 10.3.0 and the project had no Git
dependency to move. Two sources of truth, only one of them actionable.
What
GetInstallSource()replacesIsGitInstallation()and asksPackageInfo.source:Git,Registry,Local,Embedded,BuiltIn; anything imported intoAssets/isAssetStore. It falls back to the.gitshape ofpackageIdonly whenPackageInfois unavailable.GitandAssetStorehave a remote channel to poll. Every other source returns a skipped result(
CheckSkipped = true) pointing at the Package Manager, and never touches the Git/Asset Store cache —a GitHub number cached earlier in the day used to leak into unrelated installs.
CheckForUpdate/TryGetCachedResult/FetchAndCompare/CacheFetchResultroute on the sourceinstead of a bool; the window passes that source to the background check.
Tests
PackageUpdateServiceTestsgains six cases: registry install does not fetch GitHub and never reports anupdate; today's GitHub cache is not reused for a registry install; a local install short-circuits
TryGetCachedResult; Git installs still check the branch (regression guard); an embedded install touchesneither channel;
CacheFetchResultdoes not seed the Git channel for registry installs.The existing cache tests now pin the source to
Git, because the test project installs the package withfile:../../../MCPForUnity, which resolves to a local source.Docs
website/docs/guides/troubleshooting.mdgains a short section mapping install source → version source, sothe next person hitting the mismatch knows which of the two is authoritative.
Not in this PR
A Git install pinned to a tag (
#v10.0.0) still shows the notice even though the Package Manager cannotadvance it. Different fix (surface "edit the revision in manifest.json"); happy to follow up.
