Description

EditorStateCache refreshes its snapshot from the compilationStarted / compilationFinished handlers, and the snapshot reads EditorApplication.isCompiling. Unity raises those events for AssemblyBuilder builds from inside EditorCompilation.IsAnyAssemblyBuilderCompiling(), a foreach over the editor's live builder list, and isCompiling walks that same list. The nested walk sees the just-finished builder, removes it, and the outer foreach throws Collection was modified. Project Auditor hits this while compiling the player assemblies and silently drops Assembly-CSharp from its report, as described in #1485.

The handlers now pass the state the event just reported (true on started, false on finished) into ForceUpdate → BuildSnapshot, so nothing inside the handler touches EditorApplication.isCompiling. Every other caller of ForceUpdate is unchanged and still goes through GetActualIsCompiling().

I went with this over an EditorApplication.delayCall because the finished handler runs right before the domain reload; a deferred refresh would not run in this domain, and the comment on that handler already relies on the write landing synchronously.

Type of Change

  • Bug fix (non-breaking change that fixes an issue)

Changes Made

  • EditorStateCache.cs: ForceUpdate and BuildSnapshot take an optional known isCompiling; the two CompilationPipeline handlers pass it. Comment on the subscription says why.
  • EditorStateCacheCompilationReentryTests.cs: an EditMode test that starts one AssemblyBuilder build and calls Build() on a second one each frame until it starts. Without the fix the first build's finish is observed from inside that walk and the test fails with InvalidOperationException: Collection was modified; enumeration operation may not execute. from EditorCompilation.IsAnyAssemblyBuilderCompiling, the same trace as the issue.

Compatibility / Package Source

  • Unity version(s) tested: 6000.3.9f1
  • Package source used: file: (the TestProjects/UnityMCPTests setup)

Testing/Screenshots/Recordings

  • Unity EditMode tests

New test: red on beta (the Collection was modified exception above), green with the fix. Full EditMode run on 6000.3.9f1: 1486 passed, 79 skipped, 0 failed.

…n.isCompiling

Unity raises compilationStarted/Finished for AssemblyBuilder builds from
inside its walk over the live builder list, and EditorApplication.isCompiling
walks that same list. Reading it from the handler re-enters the walk, drops
the finished builder and makes the outer foreach throw "Collection was
modified", which is what breaks Project Auditor's player-assembly compile.

The handlers now pass the state the event reported into the snapshot.

📝 Walkthrough

Compilation callbacks now pass their known compiling state to snapshot updates. Snapshot construction uses that state when provided and otherwise reads the current state. An EditMode test exercises starting one assembly build while another finishes.

Changes: Compilation State Updates

Layer / File(s) Summary
Pass callback state into snapshots and test build reentry
MCPForUnity/Editor/Services/EditorStateCache.cs, TestProjects/UnityMCPTests/Assets/Tests/EditMode/Services/EditorStateCacheCompilationReentryTests.cs, TestProjects/UnityMCPTests/Assets/Tests/EditMode/Services/EditorStateCacheCompilationReentryTests.cs.meta
Compilation callbacks pass true or false to ForceUpdate. Snapshot construction uses the supplied value when present and otherwise reads the current compilation state. The EditMode test starts a second assembly build while the first finishes, waits for completion, and removes its temporary directory.

The callback change is mergeable with a bounded testing risk: the new test may pass without exercising the reported compilation failure. Strengthen its synchronization before relying on it as regression protection.

Explanation

Issue #1485 requires the compilation handlers to avoid synchronous reads of EditorApplication.isCompiling during AssemblyBuilder re-entry. The handlers now pass true and false to ForceUpdate, and BuildSnapshot uses that value instead of calling GetActualIsCompiling(). Other callers retain the fallback behavior. The new EditMode test starts overlapping AssemblyBuilder builds and covers the reported Collection was modified failure mode.

Make the regression test reach the finish-during-walk condition.

first.Build() starts the first build, but the test calls second.Build() without confirming that first is still running. A false result from second.Build() does not prove that another AssemblyBuilder remains active. The second build can start after the first build has finished, so the test can pass without exercising the re-entry condition.

Add an explicit synchronization condition or a related assertion that proves first finishes during the second.Build() walk. The consistency requirement for reproducing the old failure is not established by the repository contract, so treat it as validation guidance rather than a separate test requirement.

@coderabbitai on the re-entry test nitpick: the test doesn't rely on a single second.Build() call. It retries until Build() returns true, and it can only return true after the walk inside Build() has seen first finish. So first's compilationFinished is always raised from inside a second.Build() walk, which is the path that threw. I checked this against beta before the fix: the test fails there with the same "Collection was modified" stack as #1485, and passes with the fix. Leaving it as is.
