Self-hosted UI crashes on load with Clerk error (useAuth outside ClerkProvider) #8644

Description

@lynthius

Hey guys, I just did a fresh self-hosted install (docker compose, current main) and the UI crashes right away on localhost:8080: on my macOS.

Unexpected Application Error!
@clerk/clerk-react: useAuth can only be used within the <ClerkProvider /> component.

Happens both with the prebuilt skyvern-ui:latest image and when building locally from Dockerfile.ui, incognito too, so it's not a caching thing. Backend itself is fine — logs show UI session minting is configured, no errors there.

Dug into it a bit: the onboarding code imports Clerk hooks directly, but self-hosted never mounts a <ClerkProvider>:

  • src/components/onboarding/GetStartedModal.tsx (useAuth, useUser)
  • src/routes/tasks/create/useBrowserSessionPrewarm.ts (useAuth)
  • src/store/onboarding/OnboardingProvider.tsx (useAuth)

useBrowserSessionPrewarm gets pulled in via PromptBox on the discover page, so it crashes on the default route for anyone self-hosting.

Repro (standard quickstart):

  1. git clone https://github.com/Skyvern-AI/skyvern.git && cd skyvern
  2. cp .env.example .env (add LLM key), cp skyvern-frontend/.env.example skyvern-frontend/.env
  3. docker compose up -d
  4. Open http://localhost:8080

Workaround for anyone hitting this: stub useAuth/useUser in those three imports (return isSignedIn: false / user: null, all the call sites already handle the signed-out case) and rebuild the UI from source. Works fine after that.

macOS (macbook PRO 5 MAX), main as of 2026-09-24.
