fix(sqlite-persistence): keep reloads free of repeated setup and early election terms - #2219
Conversation

…term Rename the scheduler barrier to afterQueuedWork. It now settles after every operation queued or running in either lane at the call, including a hydrate adopted through promise discovery while the scheduler is busy, and it never rejects. The scheduling oracle covers regular work, busy adoption, failed adoption and failure mid-queue; the fairness oracle adds an empty-regular hostile barrier. Co-authored-by: Isaac <no-reply@databricks.com>
…erer reads The renderer adapter now tracks its hydration scopes and exposes their queued-work barrier through runInRegularScope, so an Electron election term waits for the renderer's queued startup and subset reads unless a leader is needed first. Writes already serialize with the term through the writer Web Lock. No IPC protocol change. A new Electron reload election-order oracle drives the real renderer, coordinator and main-process handler. Co-authored-by: Isaac <no-reply@databricks.com>
One generated owner drives the real Browser persistence, coordinator and wrapper over a real SQLite file across 1-4 Collections, any subset of missing derived setup facts, lock grant timing, statement latency, and a local write while another startup read is held. It checks setup work and repair, term order behind queued reads, leader-need liveness, and the per-reload statement budget. A leader's own-commit rescan is pinned as a known gap that main shares. …rescans on reload Move the reload class oracle into one shared module with a Node Browser production driver. Database setup now runs only when a one-statement probe finds something missing, and the write-only global schema_version row is gone. A tab no longer treats its own committed write as a gap. Co-authored-by: Isaac <no-reply@databricks.com>
…derers The Electron driver shares the class oracle's model and comparison. It found that an Electron restart reads outside any hydration scope, so a term could run ahead of those reads. Renderer requests are now queued work, and an unscheduled restart keeps both startup reads in one scope. The class grammar adds a write queued at another grant and a takeover while a follower read is held, which replace the separate Electron and per-collection ordering owners. Co-authored-by: Isaac <no-reply@databricks.com>
…m and Electron The real Chromium OPFS page and a real Electron app now drive the same reload class oracle as the Node drivers. Hold seams are host-supplied, so the Electron app arms them in its main process, where the adapter runs. The grammar adds database setup damage, managed schema changes, and a generation rotation from a source's scoped recovery. Renderer request tracking is removed: an unscheduled restart now keeps its reads in one scope, and no history needs it. Co-authored-by: Isaac <no-reply@databricks.com>
An RPC that first waits for a leadership route keeps its retries when that wait times out. A lock callback whose controller was already replaced returns before it waits. Remove a startup branch that no adapter can reach. The reload class oracle now checks a restarted term after an earlier leader need. Co-authored-by: Isaac <no-reply@databricks.com>

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win
Move the order-law check (b) out of the restart-only branch.
The if (history.lifecycle === restart && index === 0) { block opens at Line 1063. Its closing brace is at Line 1100, not after Line 1072. As a result, the whole "(b) order, on the first tab's reload" check runs only for index 0 of restart histories. That covers the mustPrecede construction and the term before ${label} violations.
- In
local write, then restart, writerExemptFromOrder === 0makes this branch return early, so the check never runs. - In every other fixed and generated history, the check is skipped.
- Fixed histories such as
late grant, eager term behind a managed claim, andmanaged Collectiontherefore never verify that a term follows the queued startup reads and claims.
A barrier that writes the term ahead of startup reads (the #2205 regression) is still caught by the hold-based checks: termDuringHold, termsWhileFollowerReadHeld, and the queued-write check. No test catches it in an ordinary reload.
The header comment and docs/contributing/oracle-coverage.md both say that every history enforces "no term runs ahead of work queued on its tab at its grant". The code does not do this.
Close the restart block after its own check. After this change, re-run the fixed histories on all four drivers. The newly active check can expose real ordering gaps or model errors.

A leader need opened the term barrier for good, so a later takeover in the same tab wrote its term ahead of reads queued at its grant. A tab that took over also kept the departed leader's route, so a source commit flushed by its queued read went to that leader. The election then waited about 30 s for the read, and the collection failed. A need now belongs to one election: a route wait still pending at the grant, or a need that arrives before the term. A grant clears any advertised route, and the lock holder ignores heartbeats. The barrier also waits for hydrations that started before the scheduler was found, and a coordinator rejects an adapter whose regular scope has no queued-work barrier. The reload class oracle adds a local write before its grant, a third tab's write, earlier needs followed by a takeover with a held read, and takeovers with a queued or unanswered source commit. The coordinator and scheduler oracles add per-election, late-heartbeat, unscheduled hydration, and adapter-rejection cells. Co-authored-by: Isaac <no-reply@databricks.com>

The reload class oracle checked its order law only in restart histories, because the restart block enclosed it. It now checks every first-tab reload; production passes on all four drivers, and a barrier that never waits now fails 26 of 29 fixed histories. The unscheduled-hydration barrier now waits for every hydration even when one fails. The real Electron reload test launches with the same Linux flags and xvfb-run as the runtime bridge test, reports a spawn error, and bounds a hung app. The hold seams call their undo method `uninstall`, because `restore` is a mangled name in @tanstack/db. 🎯 Changes
A page reload of a persisted collection no longer repeats setup that is already complete. It also no longer writes a leader election term ahead of its own reads. On the OPFS adapter each SQL statement is a round trip to the worker, and collections start one at a time. Both costs therefore add up on every page load.
Fast reloads are an accepted, permanent goal for persistence. Issue #2204 and issue #2205 measured two parts of that cost. This PR removes both costs and fixes four more problems that the new oracle found. One oracle now checks the whole reload as one law.
Before and after, for one complete collection on reload
pullSinceThread 1: skip setup that is complete (#2204)
Every reload ran nine
CREATE ... IF NOT EXISTSandINSERT ... ON CONFLICT DO NOTHINGstatements for each collection. The registry query now also counts the collection's tables, indexes, triggers, and bookkeeping rows. If all nine facts exist, setup is skipped. If any is missing, the nine statements run, as before. A schema reset keeps every setup object, so the check stays valid after a reset. The issue proposed a separate check query. This PR folds the check into the registry read, so a reload costs one statement instead of two. It also skips setup for managed cache generations, which the issue excluded.
The same pattern applies to database-wide setup. Each adapter ran about 19 statements on every load, including two
ALTER TABLEattempts that failed on purpose. One query now checks every table, index, and migrated column throughsqlite_master. The globalschema_versionrow is gone. Nothing read it, and two adapters with different schema versions overwrote it on every load.Thread 2: read rows before the election term (#2205)
A collection takes its leader Web Lock when it subscribes. Before this PR, it also wrote a durable term at once. On a reload, that transaction ran ahead of the rows the collection had queued to read.
The issue proposed two designs. The existing oracles reject both:
This PR keeps the lock at subscribe, so leader identity and takeover order do not change. Only the term write waits:
afterQueuedWork()is a new scheduler barrier. It settles when every operation that was queued or running at the call settles, in either lane. It takes no scheduler turn, so the K=1 fairness between hydrations and writes does not change. A leader need ends the wait at once. Each of these marks a need:sendRPC,ensureLeadership,This prevents the deadlock above. A need counts only for one election: it is still waiting at the lock grant, or it arrives before the term. A need that an earlier leader already served does not let a later takeover skip the wait. The leader lock is exclusive, so a grant clears the route that another tab advertised, and the lock holder ignores heartbeats. A sync commit that a new leader's queued read flushes therefore goes to the new leader, not to the leader that closed.
The barrier also waits for a hydration that started before the adapter found its shared scheduler. On an adapter without a scheduler, it waits for each running hydration.
The Electron renderer now has a hydration scope, so its startup runs as one hydration, as a Browser tab's does.
Bugs that the reload oracle found
pullSinceand a full row scan. The fix removes that line. The notice now advances the position.ensureLeadershipresolved when leadership ended, not when it began. It also replaced a queued Web Lock request, which lost the tab's queue position. It now resolves when this node becomes leader, keeps its queue position, and rejects on dispose.CodeRabbit found that the oracle checked the order law (b) only in restart histories, because of a misplaced brace. The check now runs for every first-tab reload, and production passes it on all four drivers.
A high-effort review of an earlier revision of this PR found two more problems in the barrier. Neither problem is on main. The oracle now covers both:
One more finding is not a bug. An eager collection reads two startup snapshots. The first reads metadata before the source starts. The second reads rows at the baseline hydrate. An experiment merged them, and the Electric law "rejects row loss between resume metadata and baseline hydration" failed. Both reads are required, and the oracle's budget states why.
Migration for custom persistence adapters
runInRegularScopeis now aRegularScope. It must also provideafterQueuedWork(). An adapter without a scheduler can return a promise that settles with its running hydrations. A coordinator rejects an adapter whoserunInRegularScopehas noafterQueuedWorkwithInvalidPersistenceAdapterError. The changeset records this breaking type change.🔬 Oracle Coverage
The law and its authority
The authority is the accepted persistence goal that reloads stay fast. The oracle states the law in
packages/db-sqlite-persistence-core/tests/reload-class-oracle.ts. A reload owes these results at the checkpoint after its last action settles:The shared logical scheduling oracle and the shared-driver fairness oracle own K=1 fairness under the barrier (law d).
Legal histories
The model computes each expectation from the history alone. A history chooses these axes:
There are 29 fixed histories and seeded and random campaigns (
sqlite-reload.class,sqlite-reload.class.electron). The grammar excludes dropped row tables.Production paths and observation
Four production drivers run the same loop and the same comparison:
BrowserCollectionCoordinator, one connection for each tabipcMainstand-inEach driver records every SQL statement in order, with its parameters. The comparison therefore sees a missing, repeated, or reordered statement. Each timing helper asserts its premise, or a mutant shows that only the premise can reject. A takeover grant must arrive during a held read, for example.
RED and GREEN
The implementation on origin/main fails every fixed history. The original 24 histories fail on all four drivers. The 5 histories for per-election needs fail on the Node Browser driver, which is the only driver that ran them against main. Examples:
This branch passes all 29 fixed histories on all four drivers. Both Node drivers also pass their seeded and random campaigns of the final grammar.
Hostile mutants
The Node drivers ran each mutant. Each kill below is an assertion failure, not a timeout.
The coordinator RPC oracle has three new cells for the need rule. They reject the first three latches above and a grant that keeps the closed leader's route. They also reject a late heartbeat from the closed leader that sets its route again during an election. The scheduling oracle rejects a barrier that ignores a hydration that started before scheduler discovery. The coordinator RPC oracle rejects an adapter without
