## `POST /v1/classify`
_{}
Run an encoder text-classifier (PII, prompt-safety, domain, etc.) on an input string and return per-label scores in `[0, 1]`. The target model must use the `onnxruntime` recipe. Both sequence-classification (one label set) and token-classification (aggregated span labels) models are supported.
Supported architectures: single-sequence encoder families — BERT, DistilBERT, RoBERTa, XLM-RoBERTa, DeBERTa (v1/v2), ELECTRA, ALBERT, CamemBERT. A stock `optimum-cli export onnx` directory of one of these works as-is.
A servable model directory is `model.onnx` + `tokenizer.json` + `config.json`. The `config.json` is always required: it declares the architecture, which is checked against the list above so an unsupported family (e.g. XLNet, which uses different segment/special-token conventions) is rejected at load time rather than served with wrong scores. The output contract (labels, normalization, token budget) is read from that same config; an optional `manifest.json` overrides it but does not replace the config. Without a manifest, inference assumes single-label softmax; a multi-label (sigmoid) model must declare `problem_type: multi_label_classification` in its config or ship a `manifest.json`.
This endpoint provides the classification capability that the router's `classifier` condition type will consume; the live routing-policy wiring is tracked in #2384.
The endpoint is available at:
* `/v1/classify`
* `/api/v1/classify`
* `/v0/classify`
* `/api/v0/classify`
### Parameters
Field | Type | Required | Description
--- | --- | --- | ---
`model` | string | yes* | Classifier model id (a model with the `onnxruntime` recipe). *Optional when a classification model is already loaded; the loaded model is used and echoed in the response.
`input` | string | yes | Text to classify. `text` is accepted as an alias.

Label names come from the model's `id2label` — from `config.json`, or from `manifest.json` when one is present to override it; some upstream models only declare generic `LABEL_<n>` names — see the model card for their meaning.
Malformed requests (invalid JSON, missing `input`/`text`, non-string fields, non-positive `top_k`) return `400` with an `error` object before any model is loaded.
## Routing (`collection.router`)
_{}
Naming a registered `collection.router` model in the `model` field of a `chat/completions` or `completions` request triggers the routing engine: the server picks a candidate by the policy's first-matching rule (fail-open to `default_model`) and forwards the request to it. No dedicated endpoint or `"auto"` model is involved.
The decision is reported on the response:
## `POST /v1/pull`

Register and install models for use with Lemonade Server.

Lemonade's `onnxruntime` backend (`ort-server`) needs a `manifest.json` next to `model.onnx` to know this is a token-classification model - one score per token, not one per prompt - rather than the default it assumes otherwise (single-label text-classification). `lemonade-sdk/pplx-pii-masking-onnx` ships its `manifest.json` at the repo root, so this one pull is all it needs:
* Runs every prompt through the PII classifier first (36 non-"O" BIOES labels across 9 PII types: `private_person`, `private_email`, `private_phone`, `private_address`, `private_url`, `private_date`, `account_number`, `secret`, `other_pii`).
* If any label crosses `min_score: 0.5`, the prompt routes to the local candidate (`Qwen3.5-0.8B-GGUF` by default).
* Otherwise it routes to the cloud candidate (`fireworks.kimi-k2p6` by default).
## Usage

<excerpt>citeturn1search2 [wordlim: 200] Published: 3 months ago; Crawled: 2 weeks ago; * `onnxruntime` backend (`OnnxRuntimeServer` + descriptor) wired to `lemonade-sdk/ort-server` (pin `0.3.7`). ... * `test/server_classify.py` — end-to-end through the product (client → lemond → `/v1/classify` → onnxruntime backend → ort-server): pulls a registered model, asserts label scores in `[0,1]`, and checks missing-model / invalid-model / missing-input failure paths. ... The public `/v1/classify` contract is just ort-server's raw output, with no lemond-side envelope or versioning. `classify()` forwards `json::parse(res.body)` straight through, so the endpoint returns whatever ort-server emits (`{"labels": {...}}`) with no `object`/`model`/`usage` envelope like every other lemonade endpoint. ... Now: the sole loaded classification model is resolved and injected; zero or more than one loaded classifier is refused with a clear message rather than silently picked.
1. Handle `RobertaProcessing` and `BertProcessing`, ideally with a focused token-classification test; or
2. Narrow the documented token-classification scope so stock RoBERTa compatibility is not currently promised.
The two shipped BERT/DistilBERT sequence-classification models are not affected. Once the advertised scope matches the verified behavior—or this small tokenizer case is handled—I’m happy to approve.
` Pin ort-server 0.3.7 (RobertaProcessing special-token filtering) ` [Button: … ]

` 14c2ceb `
0.3.7 filters special tokens inserted by RobertaProcessing/BertProcessing
post-processors (stock RoBERTa's <s>/</s> live in cls/sep fields, not the
TemplateProcessing map), so token-classification on the allowlisted RoBERTa
families no longer aggregates positions the HuggingFace pipeline drops.

Without a manifest, inference assumes single-label softmax; a multi-label (sigmoid) model must declare `problem_type: multi_label_classification` in its config or ship a `manifest.json`. ... ## `POST /v1/classify`
_{}
* `/v1/classify`
* `/api/v1/classify`
* `/v0/classify`
* `/api/v0/classify`
`top_k` | integer | no | Return only the highest-scoring `k` labels.
### Example request
curl -X POST http://localhost:13305/v1/classify -H "Content-Type: application/json" -d '{"model": "Phishing-Email-Detection-ONNX", "input": "Please verify your account at http://secure-login.example now."}'

When a model declares no deployment label at all, it inherits its recipe's default — `chat` for `llamacpp`, `flm`, `ryzenai-llm`, `vllm` and `cloud`, `transcription` for `whispercpp`, `image` for `sd-cpp`, `tts` for `kokoro`, and so on. ... * A mode the recipe's backend does not serve. `/classify` is served only by `onnxruntime`, so `labels: ["classification"]` on a `llamacpp` model is an error — register it as the chat model it is.
`image` | `/images/generations`, `/images/edits`, `/images/variations` | Text-to-image generation model.
`tts` | `/audio/speech` | Text-to-speech synthesis model.
`audio-generation` | `/audio/generations` | Text-to-audio generation model (e.g. music, sound effects).
`classification` | `/classify` | Text classification model. Also accepted as `classifier`.
`3d` | `/3d/generations` | Text- or image-to-3D mesh generation model.
Two label sets describe a model that cannot exist, and are refused rather than repaired:
* A mode the recipe's backend does not serve. `/classify` is served only by `onnxruntime`, so `labels: ["classification"]` on a `llamacpp` model is an error — register it as the chat model it is.
* Two different modes. `labels: ["chat", "embeddings"]` on a `llamacpp` model is an error even though llama.cpp serves both: the subprocess is launched for one mode, so the second would name an endpoint it was never configured to answer. </excerpt>

L164: dropped them. So this PR replaces it with ~100 lines of our own C ABI over the same crate (`third_party/tok_ffi`) that passes the offsets through. Fixed-label models are unchanged as in no `labels` field, and supplying one is now an explicit 400 rather than a silent no-op.
L165: Zero-shot models take the label set per request:
L166:
L167: `POST /classify
L168: {"text": "Write a function that merges two sorted lists",
L169: "labels": ["code generation", "math reasoning", "creative writing"],
L170: "top_k": 2}
L171: Returns:
L172: {"labels": {"code generation": 0.84, "math reasoning": 0.11}}
L173: `
L174:
L175: Scores are softmaxed over the supplied list, so they sum to 1 before top_k.
L176: Experiments:
L177: Compared the new ort-server with the previous build (same ONNX Runtime 1.27.0) on the models Lemonade's PII router uses: mmBERT-32k PII, OpenMed privacy-filter-multilingual v2, perplexity pplx-pii-masking and two phishing classifiers, using the 20,001-case Nemotron-PII routing corpus.
L178: * Tokenization: identical `input_ids` for all 20,001 cases on all 5 models.
L179: * Model output: old and new binaries side by side on 500 cases per PII model (longest, most non-ASCII, random): every label score exactly equal.
L180: * End to end through Lemonade's router: 1,500/1,500 routing decisions match the recorded benchmark runs (500 per model).
L181: * Edge inputs (emoji, CJK, Arabic, decomposed accents, zero-width characters, literal special tokens, empty text): identical.
L182: * Latency: unchanged (within 3%).

Do not ship zero-shot support with the 0.3.7 backend pin.
Fresh installations still launch ort-server 0.3.7, while per-request labels support is introduced by the still-open ort-server PR #4. The API and router both send labels to the backend, so zero-shot classification cannot work with the pinned binary.
Update src/cpp/resources/backend_versions.json to the first released ort-server version containing PR #4. Do not use an unverified version. The exact HTTP 400 behavior is not established; the older binary may ignore the labels, but the router will reject its incompatible label set.

I will bump the pin once the ort-server PR gets accepted.

Summary
The PR adds an optional labels array to /v1/classify and a zero_shot router classifier type, which sends the policy's labels to ort-server. Residency conflicts on all three evaluation paths now return a deterministic 409 instead of an on_error fallback. The code is clean and well tested at the unit level. However, it can't merge on the current ort-server pin, and label validation and error reporting at policy level leave room for silent misrouting.
Scope reviewed: 17 files, +612/−30, compared locally against main at b194ce2, which matches the PR head. The latest CI run was cancelled, so CI tells us nothing yet.
Blockers
-
src/cpp/resources/backend_versions.json:184—onnxruntime.cpuis still pinned to0.3.7. I checked: 0.3.7's/classifyreads onlytext,inputandtop_k, so it silently ignoreslabels. Two consequences:- CI's
classify-onnxruntimejob runstest_506_labels_rejected_by_fixed_label_model, which expects a 400 and will get a 200. - Every
zero_shotpolicy falls through toon_error.
Suggested fix: bump the pin to the ort-server#4 release in this PR.
- CI's
Major
-
src/cpp/server/routing_policy.cpp:628(parse_labels) androute_policy.schema.json:91— policy-level label checks are weaker than request-level ones.parse_labelsrejects only"", and the schema hasminLength: 1with nouniqueItems. A policy with["coding","coding"]or[" "]registers successfully. Then ort-server returns 400 on every request, and every request is routed to the default model. Suggested fix: in thezero_shotbranch ofmake_classifier, or better inparse_labelsfor all types, reject whitespace-only and duplicate labels. Add"uniqueItems": trueand"pattern": "\\S"to the schema, plus parser tests. -
src/cpp/server/routing_policy.cpp:295— zero-shot failures leave no trace in the logs.ZeroShotClassifier::evaluate(likeModelClassifierat:259) catches everything withcatch (...)and returnsfailed_score(). As a result, the warning inClassifierBandCondition(:193) never fires. This is the root cause of the "no log line" gap the PR lists. Suggested fix: catchstd::exception&, log a rate-limitedLOG(WARNING)withe.what(), and include the error text in theroute_traceentry. -
Design: lemond can't tell fixed-label and zero-shot classifiers apart. Both are
ModelType::CLASSIFICATION. That means registration can't catch:- a
zero_shotclassifier pointing at a fixed-label model, or - a
classifierpointing at a zero-shot model (the GUI "+ Classifier" gap).
The mismatch only shows up as a runtime 400. Suggested fix: add a capability marker, either:
- a
zero-shotlabel on the model entry, or - the
onnxruntimebackend readingconfig.jsonarchitecturesormanifest.jsontaskfrom the model directory at registration, without loading the model.
Then validate it in
routing_policy_parser.cpp:441, the same waysemantic_similarityrequiresEMBEDDING. This is the same pattern #3752 uses for decision models (thesystemonelabel plusmode_capability_requirements), so it keeps the two PRs consistent. #3752 will need the distinction anyway, because GGUF decision models are alsoCLASSIFICATION. - a
Minor
routing_policy.cpp:259,:559,:568— behaviour change for existing classifier types.classifierandsemantic_similaritypolicies now return 409 on a residency conflict, where they used to fall back todefault_model. The change is reasonable, but it contradicts "no breaking changes" in the description. Either call it out there or split it into its own PR.src/cpp/server/routes/lemonade/inference/classify.cpp:29—kLabelshas no limit on item count or label length. The route validator supportsmaxLengthbut notmaxItems, so add an explicit cap in the handler (around:115). This lines up with ort-server item 2.classify.cpp:29— the"\\S"pattern allows newlines inside a label, which is the template problem from ort-server item 1. Use a stricter pattern, for example^[^\r\n]*\S[^\r\n]*$.test/server_classify.py— only rejection cases are tested. There's no zero-shot model in the registry, so the end-to-end happy path (/v1/classifywith labels, plusrouting/validatewithzero_shot) is never exercised. Publishing a small LFM2 router ONNX export underlemonade-sdk, or thetiny-routerfixture, would make that test possible.
Praise
scores_declared_labelscorrectly turns a "confident miss" from a backend that ignored the labels intoon_error.- Labels are forwarded in the order given, which #3752 depends on because decision models are sensitive to position.
- The checks that a
zero_shotclassifier has noprompt, noreference_phrases, and a non-emptylabelslist are thorough.

Thanks for the work! The approach looks good, and the new SystemOne support and tests are promising. I reviewed the updated PR at abfd0ed and have a few remaining findings.
Before merging:
-
Backend dependency:
onnxruntime.cpustill pins0.3.7, which ignoreslabels. As already acknowledged, this needs a release containing ort-server#4 before merging. -
Policy validation:
zero_shotpolicies still accept duplicate and whitespace-only labels. These register successfully but fail during inference, potentially silently falling back. Please align policy validation with/v1/classify. -
Silent failures: Both
ZeroShotClassifierandSystemOneClassifierswallow backend exceptions intoon_errorwithout logging the cause. A useful warning with classifier/model and error reason would help considerably. -
SystemOne capability: Policy registration accepts any
ModelType::CLASSIFICATIONforsystemone, including ONNX classifiers without thesystemonecapability. The direct endpoint already checks the label. Registration should ideally do the same. -
Input validation: Label count/length are unbounded, and embedded CR/LF characters are accepted. Please apply consistent safeguards to both direct classification and router policies.
-
Integration tests: The new GGUF/SystemOne end-to-end tests are a good addition! However, those inference suites are skipped on regular PR runs, and the ONNX zero-shot happy path still lacks integration coverage. Could we exercise both before merging?
-
CI:
Docs And Stylecurrently fails because the recordedllamacpp.systemoneAPI example doesn't match the generated route. Please regenerate/fix the example cache.
Smaller points:
-
The residency-conflict changes also affect existing classifiers (409 instead of fallback). I support the behavior, but it should be acknowledged as a compatibility change.
-
Fixed-label and zero-shot ONNX models still share the same classification type. The backend now rejects incompatible requests, which helps, but a distinct capability would allow earlier validation. This can be a follow-up.
-
The SystemOne test fake still lacks stub bookkeeping and synchronized access to the last question (also noted by CodeRabbit). Additionally,
router-policy.mdhas a truncated sentence and incorrectly suggests that ONNX classifiers withoutsystemonealways fail zero-shot requests. -
The GUI gaps can remain follow-ups, but now apply to both
zero_shotandsystemone.
One scope question: this PR has grown from 17 to 50 files and now includes the previously separate SystemOne work (#3752). Is that intentional? If so, the PR summary and testing description should reflect the combined scope.
Overall, I support the direction. I'd focus on correctness, diagnostics, backend compatibility, and green integration tests rather than further refactoring.

This PR:
Summary
Adds support for zero-shot classification models to the onnxruntime backend and the router. These models have no per-label
head and they read the label list as part of their input, so the labels have to travel with every request instead of coming from the model's
id2label.POST /v1/classifynow accepts alabelsarray. The argument is optional. lemond refuses an empty list, a blank entry, or a duplicate entry with 400, before any model loads. lemond sends labels to ort-server.zero_shotclassifier type incollection.routerpolicies, so a routing rule can band the scores the same way it bands a regularclassifier. Its model must be a classification model; registration checks this, and there is no LLM fallback.Zero-shot classify:

ort-server PR lemonade-sdk/ort-server#4 adds the zero-shot-classification task for LFM2 routers. It also replaces tokenizers-cpp with a small Rust FFI over Hugging Face tokenizers 0.22.2, because the task needs the character offsets of each token.
Scope
Testing
For reviewers: get a zero-shot model. LiquidAI publishes LiquidAI/LFM2.5-Encoder-350M-Prompt-Router only as safetensors, so it needs an ONNX export.

Breaking Changes
Known gaps
zero_shot. The GUI router editor has three classifier types:classifier,semantic_similarity, andllm(RouterClassifierTypeinrouterTypes.ts). It does not open a policy with azero_shotclassifier: it shows "Unsupported classifier type". Thus it cannot change such a policy by mistake. To make azero_shotrouter, use the API. The GUI can chat through azero_shotrouter that the API registered."type": "classifier", which does not sendlabels. ort-server refuses the request,on_errorapplies, and each request goes to the default model. The log has no line about it.Blocked on: ort-server PR shipping a release.
backend_versions.jsonpins
onnxruntime.cputo0.3.7, which has no zero-shot support, that pin needs bumping before this merges, otherwise a fresh install gets a 400 on every zero-shot request.
