I believe this is necessary only in our theme, because pydata-sphinx-theme places the switcher differently. In our theme, it's bound together with the dark-mode switch.
Optionally, let the link icons wrap:

I really like the icons wrapping/can we just force it underneath for the sidebar?

No idea. You'll have to find a more adept CSS wizard for that.
